Dr. Prahalathan KK: Educating the Underprivileged

Dr. Prahalathan Karunakaran, an ophthalmologist, co-founded Bhumi, one of India’s widest-reaching volunteer non-profit organizations. The organization has around 1000 volunteers, who provide standard education to underprivileged children. The establishment spreads across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Kolkata and other parts of the country.

The society started off small-scale, facing numerous challenges along the way, but it gradually grew to be a community that endeavours to provide quality education to a large number of children. The curriculum incorporates courses on a variety of subjects.

Mr. Karunakaran also initiated petitions on change.org, which gained prodigious and spontaneous support from the general public as well as the media, to promote revised auto fares, to the relief of hundreds of auto commuters.

Founded on the 15th of August, 2006 , Bhumi went on to bridge the gap between the literate and illiterate, eventually transforming into a widespread and efficient system of disseminating quality education, regardless of socio-economic backgrounds.
